Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is asthma and how does it affect breathing?

Asthma is a chronic respiratory condition that inflames and narrows the airways, making it difficult to breathe. Symptoms include wheezing, coughing, chest tightness and shortness of breath. Asthma is triggered by various factors, including allergens, exercise or infections, leading to restricted airflow and breathing difficulties during flare-ups.

  • How is asthma diagnosed?

Asthma is diagnosed through a combination of medical history, physical examination and lung function tests. Spirometry is the most common test used to measure how much air you can exhale and how fast. Additional tests, like peak flow monitoring and bronchial challenge tests, may also be used to confirm the diagnosis.

  • What types of medications are used to manage asthma?

Asthma is managed using two main types of medications: relievers and preventers. Relievers, like short-acting bronchodilators, can provide quick relief by relaxing airway muscles during an asthma attack. Preventers, such as inhaled corticosteroids, aim to reduce inflammation and prevent symptoms from occurring. Long-acting bronchodilators may also be prescribed for ongoing control of symptoms.

  • Can asthma be outgrown or cured?

Asthma cannot be cured, but some children may outgrow it as they age. However, asthma can persist into adulthood or reoccur after remission. While it can’t be permanently eliminated, proper management with medication and lifestyle changes can help control symptoms and reduce the frequency and severity of asthma attacks.
